With the colder months approaching quickly, leaving the house is becoming a less appealing prospect. Instead of waiting in line to get into the hottest bar or standing on the sidewalk attempting to hail a cab, you should invite your friends over to your warm, comfortable house for a fun game night.

Chess

Chess is one of the world’s most popular games and ensures that you have fun while still giving your brain a healthy workout. This two-person strategy game can be surprisingly exciting (seriously), and has the potential to include multiple people if you decide to play tournament-style. In Chess, each player begins with 16 pieces that include one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops and eight pawns. You move each of these pieces in a different way across the board, with the goal of being the first person to “checkmate” the other’s king. You do this by protecting your own game pieces while attacking your opponent’s. You can go online to find detailed instructions on how to play correctly.

Backgammon

Backgammon is one of the oldest board games ever made. However, this game can be surprisingly fun once you get the hang of it. Backgammon still requires some skill and strategy, but it is considered an easier and faster variation of chess. In Backgammon, players move checkers strategically around the board according to the dice number rolled. In order to win, all of a player’s checkers have to be moved off of the board before their opponent’s. You can capture your challenger’s checkers, delaying their ability to move all of their pieces off the board. Full instructions and tips for winning Backgammon can be found online.
